Just as there is a “right man for the job”, there is also a right material for the job. While Silicone and EPDM are both types of rubber and share some common similarities, there are also some unique features and uses for both. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a high density synthetic rubber that has the ability to withstand high temperatures. It is also resistant to weathering, acids and alkali’s, flame retardant and has a high tensile range. These properties make it the ideal product to use for seals, grommets, o-rings and many other components that are used within the industrial and automotive industry and many other applications. Silicone is a rubber that has the ability to maintain it’s elasticity in both high and low temperatures, is flame retardant, moisture and steam resistant and is resistant to solvents and other chemicals. It also has a high insulation resistance and thermal and electric conductivity. Silicone’s chemical resistant properties make it the ideal choice for use in the engineering and automotive industry mostly due to the fact that they are resistant to solvents and work well in these environments. When determining whether to use EPDM or Silicone for your application there [...]
At Central Rubber Extrusions we focus on making our customers our utmost priority to do everything we can to assist them with a job or project. Recently, the United States Postal Service reached out to us with a problem that they could not find their original manufacturer for a bulb seal that goes around their door systems. Reverse Engineering a Rubber Product The great thing about Central Rubber is that we are a custom extrusion manufacturer and have the ability to reverse engineer a part as long as we have a sample. Luckily, the U.S.P.S. was able to provide us with a small sample of the bulb seal that they needed so that we could replicate it. With the sample we have the capability of producing a picture of the actual size of the part on our snap machine and transform the picture into an autocad drawing of the part. From that, we then produce the die to make the part. Short Run Manufacturing Capabilities Another great feature about Central Rubber is that we have the ability to do short runs of product with small footage minimum. The question is in a scenario like this, what kind of lead time would this [...]

Durometer is the hardness of a material. In our manufacturing process we use Shore A, Shore D and Shore 00 to gauge the different rubber polymers that we extrude by using a durometer gauge. Hardness may be defined as a material's resistance to permanent indentation. Durometer gauges are also referred to as shore hardness testers, hardness testers, or durometer gauges. Durometer is an important property in how the material will react in the intended environment and application. Its measurement is a unique and valuable gauge to measure for consistency and quality control. The final value of the hardness depends on the depth of the indenter after it has been applied for 15 seconds on the rubber material. If the indenter penetrates 0.100 inch or more into the material, the durometer is 0 for that scale. If it does not penetrate at all, then the durometer is 100 for that scale. It is for this reason that multiple scales exist. Durometer is a dimensionless quantity, and there is no simple relationship between a material's durometer in one scale, and its durometer in any other scale, or by any other hardness test. ASTM D2240 durometers allows for a measurement of the initial hardness, or [...]
